It was once unheard-of to be a businessman in China. Nowadays, though, it’s quite common to become your own boss. Let’s say you have an idea. Maybe you want to open an English school or sell Japanese comics. First, you need a business plan. It sets out what you’ll sell and how much everything will cost. Most businesses that fail didn’t have this. If you need to borrow money at the start, banks will ask for a detailed plan.
The best starting place for a business plan is the 4Ps: product, place, price and promotion. All these must be strong to be successful.
Product
Your product must have something unique. What makes it special compared to other similar products? If you want to start a noodle shop that has nothing new, don’t expect people to show much interest. You can research your product. For food, let people try it for free. For toys, let a few children play with them to see if they like them.
Place
There’s no point having a product that people want to buy if your shop is in an empty mall. Think about which type of person is going to buy what you sell. Where do they usually go shopping? When looking at possible places, spend the day there. See how many people pass by. Also, are there other shops nearby selling similar products? If so, how can you be better than them?
Price
Work out how much it costs to make or provide your product. As a general rule, your price will be double the cost. After all, you’re also paying for rent, staff and you need to eat too!
Promotion
How can you attract people to your shop? Advertising in newspapers and on TV is expensive.
Perhaps you can get free advertising by getting a newspaper to write about your business. 21. According to the author, the reason why most businesses fail is due to lack of ________. A. a business plan B. a shop
C. money D. successful businessmen
22. If you want to start a noodle shop, you should ________. A. expect people to show much interest B. research your noodles
C. let people try it at a low price D. let children have a try
23. What does “If so” in Paragraph 4 refer to? A. There are shops selling the goods like yours. B. Many people pass by.
C. You should think about which type of person is going to buy what you sell. D. You should spend the day on possible places.
24. You are selling toys to children. It costs 5 yuan to make each one. How much should
you charge the children for each toy? A. 15 yuan.
B. 5 yuan.
C. 10 yuan.

With the release of her debut album “Over the Rainbow” this year, she won the “Most Promising New Artist in Taiwan” at the CCTV-MTV Music Awards in July. “Long time no see” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s email, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation of the Chinese greetings with a ruled English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too thrilled to believe her. Her words could not convince me at all. So I did a research on google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” This sentence has been widely used in emails, letters, newspapers, movies, books, or any other possible places. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Ironically, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a
worldwide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan likes to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see” was his trademark. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see” became a popular phrase in the real world with thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars refer to America as a huge pot of stew. All kinds of culture are mixed in the stew together, and they change the color and taste of each other. American Chinese, though a minority ethnic(少数民族的成员) group in the United States, is also contributing some changes to the stew! Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed stew.
You can have some other examples than adoptions from Chinese, such as pizza from Italian, susi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Americans do not just simply borrow something from others. They will modify it and make it their own, so you would not be surprised to find a tofu and peanut butter hamburger in a restaurant, or to buy a bottle of iced Chinese green tea with honey in a grocery store. Since Americans appreciate Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way the American stew keeps adding richness and flavor.
28. The writer himself felt surprised at ______. A. the Chinglish expression “Long time no see” B. “Long time no see” used as standard American English C. so many literal translation of the expressions used in America D. finding out Americans use the expression every day 29. According to the passage, it can be inferred that ______. A. detectives translate the phrase “Long time no see” B. Hollywood made “Long time no see” popular
C. the huge pot of stew greatly affects all kinds of languages D. cultures can be changed in the huge pot of stew 30. The main idea of the passage is that ______.
A. some Chinese expressions are introduced into English
B. you’ll not be surprised at a tofu in a restaurant in America
C. some American expressions can be used in China
D. American English keep being enriched from different cultures
31. According to the passage, which of the following statements is not true? A. Informal language sometimes doesn’t go with grammar and structure. B. Languages are always ruled by grammar and structure.
C. “Long time no see” has been used in at least four media mentioned in the passage. D. There are four languages mentioned to be adopted in the American stew.
D
You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea that if children or even babies listen to music composed by Mozart, they will become more intelligent. A quick Internet search reveals plenty of products to assist
you in the task. Whatever your age there are CDs and books to help you taste the power of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific evidence that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixed.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it was a study described two years later in the journal Nature that sparked real media and public interest about the idea that listening to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of those ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is complex and there is a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we’ll become more intelligent.
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the state of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be set aside in the state budget so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classical music. It was not just babies and children who were exposed to Mozart’s music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly explained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk.
I’ll leave the debate on the impact on milk yield to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to Mozart makes people more intelligent? More research was carried out but an analysis of sixteen different studies confirmed that listening to music does lead to
a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-lived and it doesn’t make us more intelligent. 32. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children. B. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent. C. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s music. D. There is little scientific evidence to support Mozart effect. 33. Why did many people believe in the idea of Mozart Effect?
A. Because a study described it in the journal Nature. B. Because Mozart himself was a genius. C. Because Mozart’s music is enjoyable. D. Because Mozart’s music makes people relaxed.
34. The underlined sentence in paragraph3 suggests that .
A. people were strongly against the idea B. the idea was accepted by many people
C. Mozart played an important part in people’s life D. the US government helped promote the idea
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the Mozart effect?
A. Favorable
B. Objective
C. Doubtful
D. Positive

I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well. Here are a few suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course, as you’ll be able to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellow students. Then, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible.
Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.
Try and write me in Chinese next time. Best wishes.
Yours, Li Hua
