There is good and bad news about the number of trees on our planet. The good news is that there are seven times as many trees for everyone as we thought. Last summer I volunteered at a nursing home (疗养院) because I saw how lonely some of the old people there were.
I volunteered two days a week. I worked with Mr. Simpsons, and our job was to plan activities for the old people. I read them letters from their children and helped with special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day, and Clown Around Day. I also took the sick people for walks. We also had birthday parties and exercise days.
Through my volunteering I have made a new friend—Irene. She has family, but they live far away and cannot come to visit her often. She grew up in Shelton and lived in Milford before she came to the home. She has two sons who don’t often visit her. Her grandchildren, however, do visit her every weekend. Through our talks, I have found that like me, Irene was a cheerleader (拉拉队队员) in high school.
My volunteer experience showed me that I could bring happiness to the old people. Everyone will have to face having parents and grandparents growing older. Volunteering at the nursing home made me a stronger and more caring person. 56.Why did the writer volunteer at the nursing home?
